This is the start of what will be – honest! – just a small collection. New figures appeared (more Perry! And plastic!), new discoveries were made (Richard III and Bosworth battlefield), new rules were published (Lion Rampant, Never Mind The Billhooks) and frankly, it’s hard to quit. Then, of course, I got distracted by new shiny armies, sold off all the figures, and gave up the WOTR for Lent.Įxcept, of course, I didn’t. Using Arty Conliffe’s rather good Armati rules, my friends and I at Newark Irregulars played refights of most of the key battles in the Wars of the Roses, and I ended up with a very early article in Wargames Illustrated about the 1487 Battle of Stoke Field. My first 28mm historical wargames army was a large WOTR force, pieced together from old Grenadier ‘Fighting Men’ (basically billmen and bowmen by Mark Copplestone), old Citadel ‘Fighters’ (lo and behold, billmen and bowmen by the Perry Twins) and various rag tag figures repurposed from Bring-and-Buy stalls. Being brought up in Warwickshire, you can’t get very far without seeing The Bear and Ragged Staff – the famous symbol of Richard Neville, AKA Warwick the Kingmaker – which is still in evidence on county signs today. The Wars of the Roses is a theme that I can’t seem to stay away from.
